Storage is the number one issue in the cloud era. The data explosion is a problem for any company that now faces the issues of storing, maintain and backup huge amount of data while at the same time companies need to decentralize moving to the cloud to enable modern scenarios of work and collaboration.
Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) is a new technology based on Windows Server that allows to build hyper-scalable, highly-available storage clusters out of commodity servers and access enterprise-grade features without the need to strike costly deals with hardware vendors and engage in complicated maintenance tasks like firmware updates.
Furthermore, this technology provides the flexibility to build enterprise-grade storage clusters even without buying the necessary dedicated hardware, that is those costly SANs that are hard to deploy into datacenters that companies don’t own, enabling the flexibility needed by the cloud landscape.
Storage Spaces Direct allows to cluster commodity hardware with local-attached disks to build a performant storage cluster for converged or hyper-converged setups. That dramatically reduces the costs of the solution and also the maintenance required to manage the cluster.
By incorporating features such as caching, storage tiers, and erasure coding, S2D provides all that is needed to implement a storage solution for mission-critical workloads. Additionally, S2D works with almost any combination of disk setups, including NVMe, SSD and traditional hard-disks.
S2D deployments can be used as a storage solution for failover clustering and, by exposing industry-standard SMB3 file shares they can become the storage backend for almost any kind of application that supports that protocol. These setups can support up to 100TB per server and up to 1PB for the entire cluster.
VaiSulWeb can deploy fully managed Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) clusters by using its own top-notch hardware, supporting all types of configurations including NVMe-only, NVMe/SSD and NVMe/SSD/HDD combinations. Thanks to its tiering features, S2D can be very cost effective or deliver impressive results in terms of speed. With private networking up to 40Gbps, VaiSulWeb is ready to help you achieve the best quality in both converged and hyper-converged scenarios.
Storage Replica is a technology that allows to replicate volumes to additional servers to ensure that a copy of your data can survive one or more failure. Released with Windows Server 2016, Storage Replica has been improved in Windows Server 2019 and it allows both synchronous and asynchronous replication and it is very useful for disaster recovery scenarios. VaiSulWeb can provide additional locations for replication of single volumes or cluster-to-cluster replication.
Windows Server 2019 introduced Cluster Sets, a grouping of loosely-coupled clusters that can act together to provide even more scalability and availability. With Cluster Sets, Storage Spaces Direct clusters can provide a single namespace that enables live-migration of virtual machines among different clusters and extend the number of servers that can participate the cluster. Cluster Sets are basically cluster of clusters.
The latest and more powerful Windows Server ever is available inside VaiSulWeb network ! Windows Server 2019 provides all the latest innovation for Windows Server platform, including improvements for Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) clusters and ReFS filesystem.
Take a look at a short (5 mins) video from Microsoft about Storage Spaces Direct and how it can create pools of storage out of industry-standard, commodity servers. Storage Spaces Direct clusters will auto-tune and self-heal and can tolerate an increasing number of failures, both disks or entire nodes, depending on how many nodes the pool is made of.
Storage Spaces Direct is a new and innovative technology that can provide excellent, enterprise-grade performances without dedicated hardware or special setup. Part of Software-Defined DataCenter (SDDC) program, this technology is ideal when infrastructures are outsourced to partners like VaiSulWeb.
